Brief summary of the item: In this novel Jodi Picoult powerfully portrays an emotionaly charged marriage that changes course in one volatile moment. After an explosive argument where Jane turns on her husband Oliver, she leaves with her daughter Rebecca in search of her brother Joley's home, guided by letters from him. They arrive at the apple orchard where he works and meet Sam - the owner - and Hadley, his friend and co-worker, who both have a dramatic effect on the women's lives. At the same time Oliver, who is so used to searching for humpback whales, finds himself chasing his family in a journey of his own. Jodi Picoult tells her story from 5 people's point of view with all narration going chronologically apart from Rebecca's, which goes backwards in time. |

The Harry Potter series

Brief summary of the item: Perhaps you have been living under a rock for the past decade, or maybe you just consider yourself too old, too serious or just plain too busy to read children's books. However, this series works on so many levels, and resonates with so many people, that it has become a worldwide bestseller and brought about a huge upsurge of interest in books. The tales of the boy wizard begin with his discovery of who he is, and follow his journey through wizarding school, where he learns a lot about friendship, who should and shouldn't be trusted, and the nature of courage. The story is spread over seven books - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and the final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, released very recently. They combine myths, puns, and a great deal of humour with a lot of imagination and flair, and while they do of course make more sense if you read them in order, you could read almost any on its own apart from the final one, as books six and seven are very closely connected and deal with a lot of information. |

Brief summary of the item: A family are recruited to look after a hotel during its closure in the winter season. Acres of land, totally isolated, time to write the novel that Jack has been dreaming of; it seems like a dream job at an ideal time, but all is not as it seems. The hotel is coming alive, and Danny can see it shine. A darkened history comes to life bringing terror and suspense to all around it; especially the reader. Not a book for the faint hearted. |
