nokia N95 - A great device
Category:
Phones and PDAs

Item Summary
All-in-one handset with built-in sat-nav, MP3 player, Wi-Fi and 5-megapixel camera

Good Points
This phone will work on any GSM operator anywhere in the world. I have had many phones in the past so many years, and I have never seen a phone that can do all of this. It's like having a portable computer with you all the time. Even better than a Blackberry. I previously own the Nokia N70 and have been very intrigued when I heard about the specifications of the N95. I thought to myself, "It will weigh like a brick or more, takes a car battery to power it and have so many antennaes sticking out that it'll look like a porcupine. And oh, it'll never work...." But curiosity got the better of me and I upgraded with Orange when my contract was up.

And I am glad I did.

It is plain to see that a lot of thought and effort have been put into the design. Not only does it look good with clean lines, it is lighter and smaller than my N70. This is very impressive after packing in a quad band plus 3G phone, a GPS receiver with in-built antenna, a IEEE 802.11g class Wifi transmitter and receiver, a Bluetooth receiver, an in-built modem for internet connections, a 5 MP camera with flash at the back, the VGA camera at the front, an FM radio and a stereo speaker system. Then there are the 3.5 mm headphone jack, the USB port, the 2 GB Micro SD card slot, the video out port and the ambient light sensor which adjusts the brightness of the screen automatically. And I almost forgot to mention the extremely georgeous 2.5" screen. I still cannot get over this.

Bad Points
I cannot justify the fact that there is not a qwerty keyboard for the great size of the device, also whats the good of having all these great word processors, media applications, and not having excellent input methods or navigation controls. Blackberry rules!

General Comments
Having long been in the camp of sony erricson I saw this phone with its large screen and it reminded me of the old P900s after a bit of thinking about changing to the Nokia brand I jumped in feet first here is why!
The 5mp camera is amazingingly brilliant for a phone really crystal pics
(even if they do take a bit of time to procces)
The sound quality is fantastic on full volume its is clear with very little distortion and has an easily navigatable menu.
Calling quaility is also great (depending on signal strength)
The two way sliding screen is surprisingly versitile and sturdy.
The keys have a reassuring feel to them not flimsy yet still maintaining an edge of finess.
The Sat-Nav is unerringly accurate though locking on to satalites can take a bit of time.

To sum up this phone has nearly everything the only downside is that it needs charging almost everynight but it is a small price to pay for such a convienient device. Some people I know are holding out for the Ipod phone I cant see why and I was debating doing the same. the only thing is what is nokia going to do next!
One bad point to add which i didnt realise till a few days ago is the battery is not the best litstening to music on the way home from London and the battery died on me. If you get one of these recharge it EVERY night because it will probably not scrape through to the next night!

PCLinuxOS2007
PClinuxOS has been a long standing Linux distro, and has matured into one of the most user friendly, reliable and full-featured distros there is. It's well supported and comes with some good software, with a great selection of extra software available for quick download via the package manager. Installation is fast and easy and you can try-before-you-install by means of a LiveCD. CD burning, video and DVD playback are all included and work as well as you'd hope. Everything, especially the visual appearance, is easily customised and even the defaults are very pleasant looking and text very readable.
